TOKYO, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened lower Friday dragged down by Wall Street's overnight decline on falling consumer staples and concerns for smartphone demand which dented the technology sector.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 97.17 points, or 0.44 percent, from Thursday to 22,094.01.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 3.57 points, or 0.20 percent, at 1,746.61.

Metal product, electric appliance and machinery-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
