RABAT, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Morocco strongly condemned on Wednesday the shooting by the Israeli army at participants in peaceful protests along the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel, killing dozens of Palestinians and wounding thousands others.

Speaking in a press briefing with his Spanish counterpart Alfonso Dastis, the Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said that "Morocco strongly condemns the excessive use of force against unarmed Palestinian civilians" in response to a question on Morocco's position on the latest events in Gaza.

He reaffirmed the kingdom's total rejection of the dangerous behavior that runs counter to the international law and called for peace and ending these unacceptable escalation practices that are worsening the situation.

Morocco deplores the tragic events, which claimed the lives of civilian demonstrators who were peacefully protesting, mainly against the transfer of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, the minister added.

Regarding the issue, the Moroccan minister reaffirmed his country's rejection of this unilateral step that is contrary to international law and UN Security Council resolutions.

He reiterated Morocco's firm commitment to continue working with the U.S. administration to adopt a balanced position that could revive the peace process between Palestinians and Israelis.
