TOKYO, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks were essentially flat Friday morning and traded in a narrow direction as investors were caught off guard by U.S. President Donald Trump's abrupt cancellation of a highly anticipated upcoming summit between the U.S. and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged up 20.19 points, or 0.09 percent, from Thursday to 22,457.20.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 3.66 points, or 0.21 percent, to 1,771.99.
