SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- At least two militants were killed Tuesday in a fierce gunfight with Indian troops in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight broke out at village Larnoo, Kokernag of Anantnag district, about 91 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Today morning a gunfight broke out in the forest area of Larnoo Kokernag here between security forces and militants" a police official posted in Anantnag told Xinhua. "Two militants have been killed in the gunfight and operation is in progress."

The Indian troops or police have not suffered any damage in the gunfight.

According to police, the identity of slain militant and their group affiliation was being ascertained.

Reports said government forces cordoned off the area and conducted searches following specific intelligence inputs suggesting presence of militants.

"As the joint contingents of army and police were trying to encircle the suspected area, militants present there fired upon them triggering a fierce gunfight," the police official said.

Tuesday's killings came day after a militant was killed in a similar firefight in Chadoora area of Budgam.

On Saturday militants killed four policemen after triggering an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in the region.
