BERLIN, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Bayern Munich and Joshua Kimmich have agreed on a contract extension, the German record champions confirmed in a statement via the club's official homepage on Friday.

Kimmich extended his contract, stipulated until June 2020, ahead of schedule as the all-rounder has penned a three-year extension to stay with the Bundesliga giants until summer 2023.

"Joshua has become a key player of our team for the past two and a half years. Therefore, we are very happy that we were able to bind him in the long term," Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

The 23-year-old Germany international joined the "Bavarians" from Leipzig in July 2015 to make 109 competitive encounters. He provided 13 goals and 11 assists since his arrival.

"I am very happy to extend my contract so early. This shows that the club and those responsible trust me and see me as an important element for the long-term success of Bayern. That makes me proud," Kimmich said.

Since wearing Bayern's jersey, Kimmich lifted the German double in 2016 and the Bundesliga title in 2017. His performances in the Bundesliga earned him a spot in Germany's national team where he scored three goals in 25 caps.

Bayern Munich sit currently atop the standings of the Bundesliga standings with a 20-point advantage to runner up Schalke. The front-runners clash with relegation threatened Hamburg at the 26th round in Bundesliga on Saturday. Enditem
