Myanmar drafts strategic plan for 2020 general election

YANGON, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's Union Election Commission (UEC) has drafted a strategic plan (2019-2022) for 2020 general election, seeking suggestions from civil service organizations (CSO) and political parties and cooperation with them in the electoral process for the general election, Myanmar News Agency reported Tuesday.

The strategic plan was drawn with 11 chapters taking into consideration of the strong and weak points, advantages and challenges of the previous elections, UEC Chairman U Hla Thein told a coordination meeting with the the CSO and political parties in Nay Pyi Taw Monday.

U Hla Thein urged the CSOs to play an active role in the electoral process and to cooperate in compiling voting list and voting education, promoting inclusiveness as well as monitoring the election.

The coordination involved the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and 57 CSOs.

For the last general election in 2015, the UEC drew up the strategic plan (2013-2018).

In the November 2015 general election, the National League for Democracy won an absolute majority of the parliamentary seats.
