UN assures of long-term support to Afghanistan

KABUL, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenca during his three-day stay in Afghanistan, expressed long-term support for Afghanistan's effort to hold transparent, inclusive and credible election, the UN mission in the country said Thursday.

"In a meeting with the representatives of the Afghan government, political leaders and the diplomatic community from Aug. 6-8, Jenca, commending the government's efforts to find a political solution to the conflict in the country, including the offer of unconditional peace talks to the Taliban, he discussed the government's vision for how to move forward on a peace process and welcomed its plan for a new ceasefire and that the United Nations is ready to assist if requested," said mission said in a statement.

Afghans are preparing for parliamentary and district councils elections slated on Oct. 20 and the voters will cast their ballots to elect members of the 249-seat lower house of parliament for a five-year term while they will also vote for the first time for district councils.

The Afghan presidential election is also set to be held on April 20 next year.
