JAKARTA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- No. 12 seed Wu Yibing reached quarterfinals after edging past Japan's Yasutaka Uchiyama in men's singles competitions at the ongoing Asian Games tennis tournament on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old Wu battled for one hour and 30 minutes to beat the No. 8 seed Japanese in the hotly contested match.

Wu, boys' champion in last year's US Open, sailed through the opening set at 6-3, but was given a real test in the second. The two players held serve firmly until they tied at 6-6.

In the tiebreaker, Wu managed to win big points to nail it at 8-6.

The Asian Games, attracting more than 10,000 athletes, will run through Sept. 2.
