Ghana announces squad for 2019 AFCON qualifier against Kenya

ACCRA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah on Wednesday named a 21-man soccer squad for next month's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Kenya.

Inter Milan midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah returned to the side for the first time in four years, and William Owusu of Antwerp, Belgium, has been handed his maiden national team call-up for the game which will be played in Nairobi on Sept. 8, 2018.

The skipper of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, has been dropped by the head coach who wants to build a strong side anchored by young players.

The list also includes Frank Acheampong who has been in top form for Chinese Super League side Tianjin Teda.

Ghana will pitch camp in Ethiopia for four days ahead of the game.

The Black Stars heads Group F following the 5-0 victory over Ethiopia in the opening match of the qualifier played at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi in June, last year.

The 24-team AFCON 2019 will be hosted by Cameroon in June-July.
