4.4-magnitude earthquake hits Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Residents here felt a strong earthquake on Tuesday night, which was measured 4.4 magnitude on the Richter scale.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 7:33 p.m. (0133 GMT Wednesday) and the epicenter, with a depth of about 6.1 km, was located at La Verne, a city 54 km east of downtown Los Angeles.

It was followed by a 3.4-magnitude earthquake in the same area at 7:34 p.m.(0134 GMT Wednesday), the USGS said.

The earthquakes were felt in almost every city in the Los Angeles metropolis region.

Many people shared their experiences on social media, saying they felt the jolt like a violent shake.

"La Verne residents may have felt an earthquake and several aftershocks in the last 30 minutes," La Verne Police Department said on its official Twitter page.

"At this time there have been no reports of damage and no injuries," it said.
