KAMPALA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were killed on spot and four others critically injured in two separate road accidents on Saturday in central and northwestern Uganda, police said Sunday.

Joseph Musana, the Katonga regional police spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone that five people were killed on spot after three vehicles - a trailer carrying cement, a sand truck and another truck carrying scrap were involved in an accident at Kibukuta swamp, Buwama along the Kampala-Masaka highway.

"The driver of the trailer left his lane and rammed onto oncoming Canter truck that was carrying scrap. A truck carrying sand truck also rammed onto the truck carrying scarp," said Musana.

"Two drivers (trailer and canter) and three other people died on spot. We have launched investigations to ascertain the cause of accident. We don't know whether the driver of the trailer was tired and slept off," he said.

Meanwhile, three people were killed on spot and three others critically in a road accident involving two motorcycles in northwestern district of Arua on Saturday afternoon.

Josephine Angucia, West Nile police spokesperson said in a statement sent to Xinhua that the accident occurred at Abirici village on Arua-Nebbi road.

Uganda registers at least 20,000 accidents each year, with over 2,000 deaths, making it one of the countries with the highest road traffic death rates, according to police statistics. Enditem
