KABUL, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Two Afghan National Police personnel were killed and three police officers were wounded in a shooting incident in the country's southern province of Kandahar, a local official said Friday.

"A police officer, who recently recruited into the ANP rank, turned his weapon against his fellow officers on Thursday night at a security checkpoint in remote Arghistan district, killing two and injuring three others," Aziz Ahmad Azizi told Xinhua.

The shooter fled the checkpoint shortly after the firing and a probe is going on into the incident, he said.

The incident is a latest insider attack in the militancy-hit country.

Similar incidents had happened in the past when Afghan security force members turned their weapons against their fellow soldiers. Taliban militants often claim responsibility for the attacks.

Earlier this month, on Sept. 18, nine Afghan policemen were shot and killed in an insider attack in northern Balkh province.
