KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian planters are looking forward to exporting fresh durians to China, durian plantation advisor Lim Chin Khee has said.

In an interview with Xinhua, Lim said those planters even included palm oil planters who have recently diversified to durian farming.

According to Lim, at least 10 companies are engaging with him for durian farming as they foresee great potential for the king of fruits, underpinned by strong demand from China.

Lim foresees great potential for the premium tropical fruit as durian tours to Malaysia are gaining momentum among Chinese tourists, and more Chinese have recognized the quality of the fruit in the country.

Malaysia's current durian production is not enough to accommodate Chinese need if the fresh durian export is opened up, as most farming are carried by small holders, according to Lim.

"Thus, it is important for Malaysian planters to look into ways to improve durian plantation," he said, adding that it may not be an easy task.
