NEW YORK, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks opened mixed on Tuesday as the market was trying to recover some from the steep losses in the previous session.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 12.77 points, or 0.05 percent, to 25,374.41. The S&P 500 was up 9.46 points, or 0.35 percent, at 2,735.68. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 42.03 points, or 0.58 percent, to 7,242.90.

Shares of Intel and Caterpillar rose 2.08 percent and 1.90 percent in early trading, leading the gainers in the Dow. Shares of Boeing and Procter & Gamble dropped 1.33 percent and 0.79 percent, respectively, among the worst performers in the 30-stock index.

Tech sector advanced more than 0.6 percent, leading the winners among the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors.

Many major U.S. tech giants outperformed. Shares of U.S. chipmaker NVIDA surged more than 4.5 percent. Amazon stock rose about 1 percent and Netflix was up 0.64 percent, while Apple declined 0.5 percent.

U.S. stocks closed sharply lower on Monday with the Dow plunging over 600 points, as steep losses in Apple shares led the tech rout, dragging the market.
