One killed as cyclone Phethai hits India's southern state Andhra Pradesh

NEW DELHI, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- One person reportedly died and normal life was disrupted as cyclone "Phethai" made landfall in India's southern state Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district on Monday afternoon.

Heavy rains and winds are being experienced in many areas in the district. The entire Konaseema region is receiving heavy rainfall. The state government has alerted people to be careful and move away from the coastal areas.

According to local news reports, a large number of trees were uprooted in the state's Visakhapatnam district after strong winds and rainfall hit the region. Roads are being cleared by the local administration.

The lone casualty was due to a landslide caused by heavy rains in the state's Vijayawada city, said media reports.

As per the latest media reports, the cyclone was moving towards Visakhapatnam area of Andhra Pradesh. As many as 22 passenger trains have been cancelled in view of the heavy rains due to the cyclone.
