AL AIN, UAE, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Jordan became the first team to book a seat in the knockout stage of the round of 16 after an impressive 2-0 win over Syria on Thursday in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Jordanians demonstrated an earnest performance and looked very dangerous in couter-attacks throughout the match, where Musa Suliman Al-Taamari and Tareq Khattab scored in the 26th and 43rd minutes.

Jordan shocked defending champions Australia 1-0 on Sunday in Group B that also includes Palestine.

Syria's hope for the group survival is dim as they were held 0-0 by Palestine on Sunday.

Organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and expanding to feature 24 teams, the 17th edition of the quadrennial AFC Asian Cup is being held in the UAE from January 5 to February 1.
