COLOMBO, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Six people were arrested in Sri Lanka on Tuesday after a ferris wheel bucket collapsed at an amusement park in Veyangoda in the Western Province, police said.

A mother and her six-year-old daughter were killed in the incident.

The tragedy occurred on Monday morning as the country celebrated its 71st Independence Day holiday.

Police said the bucket carrying the mother and daughter detached from the ferris wheel when it reached the very top, crashing to the ground, killing the mother and critically injuring the child.

The girl on Tuesday morning succumbed to her injuries.

Police said those arrested included the owner of the amusement park, three technicians and the machine operator.

The amusement park has been temporarily shut down.
